Common Questions
Copyright FAQ.
Do I need to register my copyright?
While copyright protection exists automatically when you create an original work, federal registration provides critical benefits: the ability to sue for infringement, eligibility for statutory damages and attorney's fees, and a public record of your ownership. Registration is strongly recommended.
How long does copyright registration take?
Standard processing takes 3-7 months. Expedited processing is available for an additional fee when you need faster registration, such as before filing a lawsuit.
What can be copyrighted?
Original works of authorship including music, lyrics, sound recordings, books, articles, photographs, visual art, software code, films, choreography, and architectural designs. Ideas, facts, titles, and short phrases generally cannot be copyrighted.
What should I do if someone is using my work without permission?
Contact an attorney immediately. We can send a DMCA takedown notice for online infringement, issue a cease-and-desist letter, and if necessary, file a federal lawsuit. Having a registered copyright significantly strengthens your enforcement options.
